বর্তমান যুগ অনেকাংশেই কম্পিউটার নির্ভর। যুগের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে আমাদের পাঠ্য বিষয়ের সাথে সাথে কম্পিউটার শিক্ষাও খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। শিক্ষালয় ওয়েবসাইটের কাছে অনেক শিক্ষার্থী কম্পিউটার বিষয়ে পোষ্ট করার জন্য অনুরোধ করেছিলে। তোমাদের সেই অনুরোধকে উপেক্ষা করতে না পেরে শিক্ষালয়ের পক্ষ থেকে নিয়মিতভাবে কম্পিউটার বিষয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়গুলি শিক্ষালয় ওয়েবসাইটে পোষ্ট করা হবে।
আজকে আমরা জানবো অপারেটিং সিস্টেম (Operating System) সম্পর্কে।
OPERATING SYSTEM
Operating System (OS), a category of System Software, is an integrated set of programs that manages computer resources; processes commands and controls program execution. It is an interface between the user, application programs and the processor. It helps the Microprocessor to perform entire tasks of a computer system smoothly and efficiently.
FUNCTIONS OF OS
The following tasks are performed by an operating system:-

Processor Management: –
Assignment of Microprocessor to different tasks being performed by the computer.

Memory Management:-
Allocation of RAM memory area for system programs as well as user
Programs and data.

Input/output Management:-
Coordination and assignment of the different input and output devices while one or more programs are being executed.

File Management:-
Storing data in the form of file on different storage devices, transferring files from one storage device to another and editing data using editors.

Data Communication:-
Establishing connection between computers and transferring data from one computer to another.

Interpretation of user’s instructions.

Coordination and assignment of compilers, assemblers, utility programs and other software to the various users of the computer system.

Establishment of data security and integrity.

Generation of appropriate messages.
SINGLE-USER OS
If the operating system is capable of serving only one person at a time then the OS is said to be a Single User OS. In that case your friend will just sit beside you as a spectator unless you give him/her an opportunity to interact through the keyboard. DOS is the common example for single user OS.
MULTI-USER OS
The operating system that has the ability to serve more than one user connected to the computer where the OS is running through different terminals simultaneously is known as multi-user OS. Connected users can access the same file; share all the programs on the computer where the OS is running and can also share other resources like printer. LINUX, WINDOWS NT are the example of multi-user OS.
MULTITASKING OS
Multitasking means that even a single user can have the computer work on more than one task or program at the same time. UNIX, WINDOWS are such type of OS that have the multitasking feature.
